Are Overnight Oats Healthy?

Yes! Overnight oats contain all of the key ingredients that make up a balanced breakfast:

  • Fibre-rich carbohydrates: Oats are a naturally gluten-free whole grain carbohydrate source and a great source of fibre to include at breakfast. A 1/2 cup serving of rolled oats offers 4 grams of fibre. When we add the strawberries and chia seeds, these bump up the fibre content too!
  • Protein: One of the keys to an energizing breakfast that actually keeps you full is protein. The addition of greek yogurt to overnight oats adds protein to give you some more staying power.
  • Healthy fats: I mentioned that chia seeds offer fibre, but they are also a great source of healthy fats like omega-3s!
  • Fruit/Vegetables: Lastly, I always recommend at least one serving of fruit or vegetables at breakfast. This recipe features strawberries, which are a fantastic source of vitamin C and another source of dietary fibre.

Ingredients for Strawberry Cheesecake Overnight Oats:

You may be wondering how exactly to mimic strawberry cheesecake in a breakfast oats recipe. There are a few key ingredients you’ll need:

  • Strawberries, of course. In this recipe I used fresh strawberries, but I’m sure frozen would be just as delicious.
  • Cream cheese. Now I know this might sound a little weird, but trust me. You just need a little bit of light cream cheese for the creamy texture and tangy cheesecake flavour.
  • Graham crackers. You can either crumble a graham cracker yourself or use store-bought graham cracker crumbs.
  • And of course, rolled oats, greek yogurt, milk of choice, and chia seeds. The standard overnight oats ingredients!

What are the Best Oats to Use for Overnight Oats?

Rolled oats or plain old fashioned oats are the best oats to use in overnight oats recipes.

I have used quick oats before. They still tasted great, however they do tend to soak up more of the liquids and can get a little soggy.

I also would not recommend using steel cut oats, although if you do try it, know that they will likely be chewier, and I’d recommend increasing the milk by approximately 1/4 cup. If this is something you try, let me know how they turn out!

How to Make Strawberry Cheesecake Overnight Oats:

Making this healthy overnight oats recipe is easy!

Like most of my overnight oats recipes, you want to start by combining all ingredients (except for half of the strawberries – save these for topping!) into a mixing bowl or mason jar. I tend to prefer a bowl for this recipe because I can really make sure everything is well-combined.

Once the ingredients are well-combined, store the mixture with an airtight lid (you may have to transfer it to another dish or jar for this) in the fridge overnight.

In the morning, most of the liquid should have absorbed, resulting in a thick and creamy oatmeal consistency. Top them with the remaining strawberries and if you like, some additional crumbled graham cracker, then enjoy your delicious and nutritious strawberry cheesecake overnight oats!

Why Make Overnight Oats with Greek Yogurt?

I always add greek yogurt in my overnight oats recipes. Not only does greek yogurt add an extra creamy texture, it’s also a great way to add a quality source of protein to your oats.

While oats on their own are a wonderful, fibre-rich whole grain, they likely won’t keep you very full on their own. When we pair them with a protein like greek yogurt, this helps to slow down the digestive process, keeping us fuller and fuelled for longer.

I typically use plain greek yogurt in my overnight oats and then add a liquid sweetener like honey or maple syrup to sweeten them. This way, I have a little more control over the added sugar and can make them just as sweet as I like.

Feel free to do this, or use a sweetened/flavoured greek yogurt (like vanilla) and omit the sweetener.

Do You Eat Overnight Oats Cold or Hot?

The great thing about overnight oats is that you can eat them cold, straight out of the fridge. That being said, you can also warm them up in the microwave! Both are delicious. Personally, I prefer to eat mine cold as I don’t have the patience to warm them up ;). I’m all about quick and easy!

How Long Do The Strawberry Cheesecake Overnight Oats Last?

Overnight oats will keep well in the fridge up to 4 days as long as they are kept in a sealed airtight container.

For meal prep, you can easily double (or triple!) this recipe for the days ahead. I’ve done this many times and it always turns out great.
