Pina Colada Smoothie (Gluten-Free + Vegan Option)
Feel like you’re on a tropical vacation with this Pina Colada Smoothie recipe! This smoothie recipe is fun refreshing, and packed with nutritious ingredients and tropical flavour. Gluten-free with vegan option.

I could really go for a tropical vacation right now. Anyone else?
Since I can’t do that just yet, I’m bringing all of the tropical vibes to my own home with this Pina Colada Smoothie recipe. This smoothie makes a balanced breakfast option, but it also makes you feel like you’re basking in the sun on a tropical island, even if you’re at home.
Besides being delicious and refreshing, this is a balanced and nutritious smoothie. It’s got vitamins and minerals from banana and pineapple and protein from greek yogurt and hemp seeds. Also, it gets that creamy coconut texture and flavour thanks to coconut milk AND coconut flakes. Yum!
This recipe is naturally gluten-free, and can easily be made vegan by substituting the yogurt. See below for the recipe and my substitution suggestions!
Pina Colada Smoothie Ingredients:
This Pina Colada Smoothie recipe is really easy to make! To make it (recipe serves 2), you’ll need:
- 1 large frozen banana
- 1 cup frozen pineapple
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 2 tbsp coconut flakes
- 2 tbsp hemp seeds
- 1/2 cup coconut milk (the one from carton, not the can!)
Tips for Making this Pina Colada Smoothie Recipe:
Here are some tips for making this smoothie recipe, well, the best smoothie ever. 🙂 Thank me later!
Tip #1: Add Liquid First
I see a lot of people adding the liquid as the last ingredient in their smoothies. For more efficient blending, add the liquid in first! In this recipe I used coconut milk (from the carton, not the can) and I always add it to my blender first.
Tip #2: Use Frozen Fruit
While you can use fresh banana and pineapple for this Pina Colada Smoothie recipe, I recommend using frozen fruit for a thicker, creamier texture. This will also make the smoothie colder, which is more refreshing in my opinion!
Tip #3: Blend the Pina Colada Smoothie a Little Longer
If you can spare another minute or so, blend that smoothie a little longer! The longer it blends, the creamier and smoother it will be. Because no one likes chunks of fruit or seeds in their smoothie!
Substitution Suggestions:
If you don’t have certain ingredients or are looking to make substitutions, here are some suggestions that you can try instead:
For 1 cup plain Greek yogurt:
- 1 cup vanilla Greek yogurt
- 2 servings of protein powder (I recommend unflavoured or vanilla)
- 1 cup plain or vanilla non-dairy “Greek yogurt”
For 2 tbsp hemp seeds:
- 2 tbsp flax seeds (ground or whole)
- 2 tbsp chia seeds (ground or whole)
For 1/2 cup coconut milk:
- 1/2 cup any other milk of choice + an additional 2 tbsp coconut flakes
