This Healthy Southwest Salad Dressing is everything you need to punch up your salad. The creamy texture comes from Greek yogurt (so it’s nutritious too!), and its packed with the perfect mix of smoky and sweet flavours. And believe it or not, this comes from a simple combination of dried spices, lime juice, and honey.

Creamy Salad Dressing with Southwestern Flavours:

You might be wondering “what is southwest salad dressing anyways?”. Great question!

Southwest salad dressing is basically a dressing made with southwestern flavours. Think things like chili powder or chipotle, paprika, cilantro or coriander, garlic, cumin, and lime.

Please keep in mind that while this Southwest Salad Dressing recipe may not be authentically southwestern, it pulls inspiration and admiration from the southwestern flavours. In this recipe, we use:

  • Plain Greek yogurt
  • Extra-virgin olive oil
  • Lime juice
  • Honey
  • Chipotle powder
  • Paprika
  • Coriander
  • Garlic powder
  • Salt & pepper

What Makes it Healthy?

Let me be real with you. Even as a Registered Dietitian, I recognize that any tasty salad dressing is a good dressing because, well, it helps you eat more vegetables!

Want to know what’s an even bigger bonus? If the salad dressing is not only tasty, but offers some nutrition benefit, too! That’s why I love making recipes with Greek yogurt.

Greek yogurt is higher in protein than regular yogurt, offering 18 grams of protein per 3/4 cup serving. In addition to protein, it offers several important nutrients than many individuals (particularly North Americans) are often lacking. This includes calcium, potassium, zinc, and magnesium.

In addition to using Greek yogurt, another main ingredient in this Healthy Southwest Dressing is extra-virgin olive oil. Olive oil is a source of monounsaturated (healthy) fats, and because extra-virgin olive oil is unrefined, it offers extra antioxidants, too.

How to Make Southwest Salad Dressing with Greek Yogurt:

One of my favourite things about this dressing recipe is how easy it is to make. You don’t need any fancy equipment – just a bowl and a spoon for mixing. You could make it in a blender if you wanted a really good emulsion, but this definitely is not necessary.

Storing the Salad Dressing:

Make sure to store the salad dressing in a sealed, airtight container (like a glass bowl with a lid or a mason jar). It will keep in the fridge this way up to 1 week.

Ways to Use Southwest Salad Dressing:

Of course, you can serve Southwest Salad Dressing on a Southwest Salad. That was the original reason I created this recipe! But really, you can use it on any salad that you feel would pair well with the creamy texture and smoky flavours of this dressing.

In addition to salads, this dressing also makes a delicious sauce for things like sandwiches and wraps!

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together greek yogurt, olive oil, honey, and lime juice until smooth and well-combined.
