Some hydrating, healthy drink ideas from a Registered Dietitian to help you quench your thirst and feel your best in the summer heat.

As the temperature outside heats up, more and more people want something tasty and cold to quench their thirst. As a dietitian, I do believe water should typically be our drink of choice to meet hydration needs and that it’s important to limit consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. That being said, I don’t think hydrating needs to be boring!

I know for some of you (including myself) drinking water and only water can get a little tiresome. So, I’ve come up with a list of healthy drink ideas to quench your thirst and keep you hydrated this summer.

Healthy Drink Idea: Fruit/Herb Flavoured Water

Flavouring water naturally with fresh fruit and herbs is one of my favourite ways to hydrate. A little flavour boost makes plain old water a little more enticing!

I love adding some ice and a wedge of lemon or lime to my re-usable tumbler and refilling it with water all day long. You can also fill a large jug with water, fruit and herbs to keep in the fridge and pour a glass when you want some! Here are some combinations to try out:

Cucumber & Mint:

Cucumber slices and fresh mint leaves. Tastes like you’re at the spa!

Citrus Combo:

Thinly sliced orange and/or grapefruit and lemon. Sweet and refreshing!

Blueberry Basil:

Wash some fresh blueberries and add them to your water with basil leaves. A unique but surprisingly delicious combination!

Healthy Drink Idea: Sparkling Water with 100% Orange Juice

Sipping on sparkling water is another way to make hydrating a little more exciting. Mixing sparkling water with 100% orange juice enhances taste and adds nutrients like vitamin C, potassium, folate and thiamin. The sweetness from 100% orange juice is naturally occurring from oranges with no sugar added. I like to add ½ cup (120 mL) 100% orange juice to a large glass and fill the rest with sparkling water.

Healthy Drink Idea: Homemade Fruit “Slushies”

This is one that the kids will love! To make a homemade fruit “slushy”, add one-part frozen fruit and one-part water to your blender. Blend until your reach a slushy, icy consistency. Pour into a glass and enjoy. I recently made a homemade slushy with frozen watermelon and it was totally delicious!
