Is Blue Cheese Dressing Healthy?

I can tell you one thing, this one is!

I am a Registered Dietitian, and one of my favourite ways to share my nutrition expertise is by creating recipes that are not only tasty and simple to make, but that offer benefits to your health too.

Traditional blue cheese salad dressings tend to be high in calories, saturated fat, and likely sugars and/or sodium. And hey, that’s not to say that there isn’t room for these in a balanced diet. However, you’re probably here on my website because you’re searching for recipes made with more whole-food, nutrient-dense ingredients. And you’ve come to the right place!

  • Using Greek yogurt in my recipes is one of my favourite ways to boost nutrition AND add creamy texture where its needed. Greek yogurt (not regular yogurt) is rich in protein that helps to keep you feeling full, and offers important micronutrients like calcium, potassium, and zinc.
  • In addition to Greek yogurt, another beneficial ingredient in this dressing is the extra-virgin olive oil. It’s rich in healthy fats, a source of antioxidants, and the fats help the body absorb fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E and K) from your salad.

Ways to Serve Greek Yogurt Blue Cheese Dressing:

Make it in 5 Minutes!

All you need to prep the blue cheese dressing is a handful of simple ingredients and a small food processor or blender. You can also mix it by hand, but expect the result to be a little less smooth (but delicious nonetheless).

Storing Greek Yogurt Salad Dressing:

Because it is homemade and doesn’t contain all of the preservatives that a store-bought bottled dressing does, it will only keep for about 1 week in the fridge. Store it in a sealed, airtight container (like a glass bowl with a lid or a mason jar).

The good thing is that the recipe won’t make too much dressing that it will go to waste. The recipe below makes about 2-3 servings (depending on the size of your salad, really) so it’s easy to put to use in 1 week.

  • Add all ingredients to your food processor or blender.

  • Blend on the "puree" setting (if there is one) for 1-2 minutes, until smooth and creamy, stopping once to scrape down the sides if needed.
