Not Your Average Turkey Burger:

If there’s one thing about me, I’m seasoning my homemade burgers. You won’t find a bland burger on this site! In fact, I’ve dreamt up lots of tasty burger recipes that are good for you too – like my greek chicken burgers with feta aioli and quick and easy canned tuna burgers. What they all have in common? Tender, juicy texture, flavourful add-ins, and of course – good nutrition.

This turkey burgers recipe feature features the delicious combination of spinach and feta cheese, plus some extras that take them to the next level. Everything is mixed together in one bowl (no pre-cooking required!) before forming into patties and cooking on the grill. Grilling the burgers also helps to lock in flavour and juices, drain away excess fat, and infuse the burgers with that smoky, caramelized taste. I’m telling you, these are SO GOOD.

Ingredients for Flavour AND Nutrition:

Like I said, I love a burger add-in. I love that certain ingredients can add flavour, increase moisture, boost nutrition, OR do all three! Here are some key ingredients and their roles in these juicy spinach feta turkey burgers (besides lean ground turkey, of course):

  • Spinach, duh: We’re using defrosted frozen spinach here! After defrosting, I recommend squeezing all of the water out before roughly chopping it up. What I love about this is that it is a powerful nutrition booster – adding fibre, vitamin K, iron, and more – but it also adds moisture to keep the burger patties juicy. Chopping it up helps it to blend seamlessly into each bite without overpowering the flavour.
  • Finely diced shallot: Another moisture enhancer (I told you, these burgers are juicy!) that adds depth to the savoury flavour of these burgers. Make sure to dice it up small so you don’t get big chunks in your patties!
  • An egg: This acts as a binder, holding everything together so they don’t fall apart during cooking.
  • Breadcrumbs: I’m talking a lot about moisture, but we need a balance here. The breadcrumbs help to absorb some moisture, bind the mixture, and keep everything together so the burgers don’t end up crumbly.
  • Oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes: This might be my favourite addition to these burgers! They add a juicy, umami flavour and a hint of tanginess. Plus, you get small bursts of chewy texture throughout the burger patties.
  • Feta, duh! Feta: The feta cheese brings a mix of saltiness and richness, plus they make little pockets of creaminess in the burgers! Yum.

Mix, Shape, Grill!

A Few Helpful Hints:

  • To ensure the burgers are done without overcooking them, I suggest using a digital meat thermometer and cooking the turkey burgers to an internal temperature of 165F.
  • This recipe will make five larger turkey burger patties or six small size patties.
  • You can grill the burgers outside on your barbecue, or inside on a grill pan or griddle.
  • For a well-rounded meal, serve the burgers with a side salad or even homemade sweet potato fries.
