As a Registered Dietitian and self-proclaimed smoothie queen, coming up with tasty and healthy smoothie recipes is my jam.

I have a specific smoothie formula that I follow to ensure my smoothie recipes (including this banana vanilla smoothie) are nutritionally balanced, energizing, and will keep you full for longer than 30 minutes.

This banana vanilla and yogurt smoothie covers all the bases. It’s got protein (the key to feeling full) from Greek yogurt, nut butter, and hemp seeds. It offers satiating healthy fats (which are also good for your heart!), fibre for good digestion, and an array of essential micronutrients like potassium, calcium, and magnesium.

Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients

Here’s what you need:

  • Ripe banana: Fresh or frozen will do
  • Vanilla Greek yogurt: I like to use 2% M.F. but nonfat also works
  • Vanilla bean paste: This gives a stronger vanilla flavour, but you can swap with vanilla extract if that’s what you have on hand.
  • Hemp seeds: Also known as hemp hearts. These little seeds offer healthy fats, protein, and important minerals!
  • Pure maple syrup: To add a little extra sweetness. Feel free to omit this if you prefer your smoothies less sweet.
  • Almond butter: This adds creaminess, plus some extra protein and fat.
  • A pinch of salt: It just helps to bring out all the delicious flavours.
  • Ice: To make our smoothie cold, creamy, and refreshing.
  • Milk of your choice: To help it blend!

Step 2: Blend it Up!

This really is the simplest of simple recipes. Just dump everything in the blender and blitz!

Step 3: Pour and Enjoy Your Vanilla Banana Smoothie

The recipe below makes 1 smoothie serving, but feel free to double or triple the ingredients if you’re serving your partner and/or family as well.

If you want to prepare the banana and vanilla smoothie ahead of time, it will keep in the fridge up to 24 hours. If you have a busy morning, blend it up the night before. Store it in the fridge in a sealed cup or mason jar, and then in the morning, just grab and go!

Ingredients

  • 1 medium ripe banana, fresh or frozen
  • 3/4 cup vanilla Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp hemp seeds
  • 1 tbsp almond butter
  • 1 tsp pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla bean paste, can sub. with pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup ice
  • 1/4-1/2 cup milk of choice, unsweetened, depending on your smoothie thickness preference

Equipment

Instructions 

  • Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender.
