When it comes to food and flavour combinations, I feel like chocolate and peanut butter gets all of the attention. But chocolate and coffee? Now that is a winning combination in my eyes.

The inspiration for this creamy, high-protein cafe mocha smoothie came from my desire to kill two birds with one stone. A delicious and nutritious smoothie recipe, and caffeine to really jump start the day.

Just like my Creamy Chocolate Cauliflower Smoothie and my Easy Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie, all you need is 5 minutes, a small list of nutritious ingredients, and a blender. The result? A healthy and filling smoothie that tastes like it came from a fancy $10 juice bar rather than your own kitchen.

What is a Cafe Mocha?

If you’re not already familiar, a cafe mocha, also known as a mochaccino, is a variant of a cafe latte. It’s made with espresso, warm (steamed) milk, and chocolate. Basically, a cafe mocha is a latte with chocolate.

Traditionally they are served as a warm espresso drink, but these days you can order just about anything iced, including cafe mochas.

This recipe is my take on the cafe mocha (chocolate & coffee) flavour, but in blended smoothie form.

The Making of a Healthy Smoothie Recipe:

As a Registered Dietitian and nutrition professional, I take my smoothie-making pretty seriously. I can’t just throw a bunch of random ingredients in a blender and hope for the best. There is a specific, thoughtful smoothie formula that I use to make smoothies that are not only tasty, but balanced and satisfying, too.

The ingredients that I use are selected with the intention of creating a nutritionally well-rounded smoothie. With dietary fibre and protein to keep you full, fruits and veggies for energy and nutritional value, fat for satiety, and of course the right flavours so that it taste good too.

Cafe Mocha Smoothie Ingredients:

Here’s what we used in this delicious chocolate coffee smoothie recipe:

  • Banana: Fresh or frozen works. For sweetness, creamy texture, dietary fibre, and micronutrients like potassium.
  • Frozen cauliflower: Not only does it add extra nutrition like vitamin C and fibre, frozen cauliflower makes smoothies thick and creamy.
  • Chocolate protein powder: To make sure we get that chocolate flavour and enough protein to keep us full and energized.
  • Espresso: Puts the cafe in cafe mocha. And the caffeine zing is nice! Alternatively, you can use chilled brewed coffee.
  • Cocoa powder: To make sure we get a really nice rich chocolate flavour in addition to the chocolate protein powder.
  • Hemp seeds or chia seeds: I’ve used both and they are equally wonderful. Hemp seeds will give you more protein, while chia offers a fibre boost.
  • Milk of your choice: I recommend a higher protein milk like dairy or soy, but any will do.
  • Honey: Just a touch, for flavour and sweetness.

Substitution Suggestions:

The great thing about smoothies is that it’s pretty easy to adjust them to your own liking. If you’re not jiving with any of the ingredients listed above, here are some simple swaps you can make:

  • Nutrition boosters: Instead of hemp seeds or chia seeds, use flax (ground or whole) seeds or a tablespoon of nut butter.
  • Milk: As I’ve mentioned, you can really use any milk variety (dairy or non-dairy) of your choosing. For optimal nutrition, I recommend choosing one with a higher protein content and/or one that is fortified with calcium and vitamin D.
  • Protein powder: If you don’t have chocolate, use an unflavoured protein powder and double up on the cocoa. Alternatively you can use 1/2 – 3/4 cup of plain greek yogurt and double the cocoa powder.
  • Coffee: If you don’t have espresso on hand, feel free to use a chilled brewed coffee instead.
  • Honey: If you’re vegan or you just don’t have honey, another sweetener like maple syrup or agave works just the same.
  • Frozen cauliflower: You can either omit this altogether, or substitute it with 1/2 cup of ice to maintain that cold, creamy texture.
