When you wake up and breakfast is ready for you >

Is there anything better than that? Actually, yes. What’s even better is when you wake up and a healthy and super delicious breakfast is ready for you. That’s why I absolutely love making overnight oats. I’ve been creating overnight oats recipes (like my nutritious strawberry cheesecake overnight oats) for almost a decade now, and these chocolate protein overnight oats were inspired by my original protein overnight oats recipe. But this time, they’re creamy AND chocolatey!

High in protein and fibre to keep you full:

Being a registered dietitian and recipe developer, I was very intentional when developing this recipe for high protein chocolate overnight oats. Each ingredient has a purpose (or more than one!), and these are some of the key players:

  • Rolled oats: These are high in fibre, and obviously the base for my overnight oats recipes. I recommend using old fashioned or rolled oats versus quick oats. While it will work, quick oats have more surface area and absorb more liquid – which can end up making the overnight oats texture mushy.
  • Greek yogurt: Not only does it contribute to the rich and creamy texture, it is one of the key contributors of protein in these chocolate protein overnight oats. I like to use unsweetened 2% Greek yogurt and add my own sweetener (maple syrup).
  • High protein milk: I always recommend using a higher protein milk variety to boost the protein in overnight oats. My choice is always dairy milk, but soy milk is another high protein option. There are various other ‘protein milks’ on the market these days, so you could use one of these options too.
  • Chia seeds: They absorb the liquid creating that oatmeal-like texture without any cooking, and they also contribute a whopping 5 grams of fibre to each serving of these oats!
  • Hemp seeds: Lastly, I love adding a tablespoon of hemp seeds (also known as hemp hearts) to my overnight oats recipes for a protein boost. A single tablespoon adds an additional 3 grams of protein to our chocolate overnight oats recipe!

Grab them and go on busy days

I think my most favourite part about these overnight oats is that they’re made for us busy people. Whether you’re rushing out the door to work or getting the kids off to school, having these prepped ahead of time and waiting for you in a cute jar the fridge is one less thing on your plate in the morning – no pun intended!

All you need to do is take 5 minutes the evening before and mix these up in a jar or meal prep container. Cover, and let them do their thing in the fridge overnight! The oats and chia seeds will soak up the liquid from the greek yogurt and milk, creating a thick and creamy oatmeal-like consistency. Then, you can enjoy them cold (this is what I like to do) or warm them up in the microwave before serving with your fav toppings. Might I suggest berries and some creamy homemade peanut butter?

Meal prepping? Just double, triple, or quadruple the recipe so you’ll have breakfast ready for several days in a row. Top with peanut butter, berries, or a sprinkle of chocolate chips!
