What is Fajita Seasoning?
Fajita seasoning is a mix of dried spices and herbs that are used to season and flavour fajitas.
In Tex-Mex cuisine, fajitas are any stripped grilled protein (like chicken, steak, or tofu) paired with stripped bell peppers and onions that are usually served on soft flour or corn tortillas.
The protein is usually tossed with the fajita seasoning while cooking to add Tex-Mex flavour to the dish.
What Ingredients Are In Fajita Seasoning?
While this may vary by brand, a packet of store-bought fajita seasoning mix contains:
Corn Starch, Maltodextrin, Salt, Sugar, Sea Salt, Spice, Chili Pepper. 2% Or Less Of: Vegetable Oil (Canola, Soybean And/Or Sunflower Oil), Citric Acid, Artificial Color, Yeast Extract, Onion Powder, Silicon Dioxide (Anticaking Agent), Natural Smoke Flavor, Natural Flavor, Garlic Powder

Is DIY Fajita Seasoning Healthier Than Store-Bought?
As a dietitian, I’m can definitely get behind making nourishing swaps that still feel satisfying. Store-bought seasoning tends to be quite high in sodium, so making your own at home gives you more control over how much salt and other ingredients you add.
Most store-bought seasoning packets also have added sugars, while this simple homemade fajita seasoning has no added sugars whatsoever.
Switching from store-bought fajita seasoning is also be healthier for your wallet as it’s cheaper to make than to buy the single-use packets. That being said, it’s still okay to use the store-bought fajita seasoning mix if that feels more satisfying, enjoyable or convenient for you.
Know that whichever you choose, a single food or ingredient won’t make or break your health, it’s the habits that you carry out regularly that matter most!
What’s the Difference Between Fajita Seasoning and Taco Seasoning?
Many people wonder if there is a difference between fajita seasoning and taco seasoning.
While they are very similar, taco seasoning tends to have more chilli powder, oregano, and spice (think cayenne pepper or chilli flakes) than fajita seasoning. Fajita seasoning is more mild, and tends to have more cumin in it.
That being said, there is really no reason that you can’t use this homemade fajita seasoning in dishes other than fajitas.
Because the flavours are so similar, you definitely can use it to season tacos or other Tex-Mex style recipes. Try using it to season the sweet potatoes in these Black Bean & Sweet Potato Taco Bowls!
