Is Canned Salmon Healthy?

Absolutely! I’m a Registered Dietitian here to assure you that canned salmon is indeed a healthy option with a variety of nutrition benefits, which include:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Canned salmon is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which are essential for heart and brain health.
  • High in Protein: It is a great protein source, which promotes muscle repair and growth, and keeping you feeling full and satisfied.
  • Calcium and Vitamin D: Canned salmon contains soft, edible bones, providing a natural source of calcium and vitamin D, which are crucial for bone health.

In addition to the health benefits, canned salmon is easy to store, has a long shelf life, and requires no cooking, making it a convenient and quick addition to meals. It’s also a more affordable option compared to fresh salmon.

How to Make this Canned Salmon Salad with No Mayo:

This canned salmon salad recipe uses no mayo whatsoever. Instead, we use plain Greek yogurt for that traditional creamy texture (Greek yogurt has more protein than mayo or regular yogurt, too!)

For fresh, tangy flavour we add fresh dill, dijon mustard, garlic, lemon juice, and olive oil, too.

Here’s how to make it:

How to Serve Canned Salmon Salad:

My favourite way to serve this salmon salad is with crackers for dipping. You can also dip vegetables like cucumber slices, celery sticks, and carrot sticks in it.

Alternatively, you can use it to make a delicious salmon salad sandwich or a salmon salad wrap.

Meal Prep and Storage:

The recipe below makes 2-3 servings. If you are meal prepping, you can double the recipe so you have salmon salad prepared for the week ahead.

The salad with keep in the fridge up to 4 days in a sealed container. I recommend storing the salmon salad separately from any bread, crackers, or wraps to prevent them from getting soggy.
