I’ve always enjoyed a good green juice. There’s something about it that feels so refreshing, hydrating, and well, healthy. Juices and smoothies can be a really great opportunity to pack nutrition into your day!

Unfortunately, it costs an arm and a leg for a bottle of cold-pressed green juice at a cafe.

So why not make it at home?

Now, I used to have a juicer. It was great, but it took up a ton of space and was a major pain to clean. So I sold it. But sometimes I still crave a cold, nutrient-dense green juice. And that’s where I turn to this Blender Green Juice recipe!

All you need is ten minutes, a blender, and your fav green veggies. Let’s do this!

What’s the Difference Between Smoothies and Juice?

There is a difference between juicing vs blending fruits and vegetables. Let a Registered Dietitian break it down for you!

Juicing fruits and vegetables extracts the liquid content (the juice), leaving behind the fibrous pulp. This is typically done using a juicer, but can also be done by blending the fruits and vegetables together and straining out the pulp.

To make a smoothie, whole fruits and vegetables are blended together (often with other ingredients like yogurt or juice). Smoothies contain the entire fruit, including the juice and fibres.

Because of this, smoothies contain more fibre than juices do. Both are good sources of vitamins and minerals.

Benefits of Green Juice:

  • Hydration: The fruits and vegetables used in this blender green juice have high water contents. By extracting the liquid, we’re extracting the water, along with vitamins, and minerals that also act as electrolytes! Therefore, this green juice is a source of fluid and electrolytes, which are both important for hydration.
  • Vitamins and minerals: Along with liquids, juicing extracts concentrated nutrients and phytochemicals present in fruits and vegetables. It provides a quick and easily digestible form of nutrition. Since the fibre is removed, the nutrients may also be absorbed more rapidly by the body. While I’m a big fan of fibre, this can be helpful if you’re looking for nutrition in a pinch!

Despite it’s low fibre content, this this healthy green juice may still provide some nutrition benefits!

Green Juice for Weight Loss:

Weight loss ultimately boils down to one thing: a calorie deficit. Meaning you consume less calories than you exert. No food or drink will act as a “quick fix” or magically make you lose weight, and I do not recommend drinking green juice as a meal replacement.

I also do not recommend juice cleanses of any kind. That being said, if having green juice as a supplemental part of your weight loss journey (i.e. as a way to ensure you’re getting the nutrients you need while achieving a reasonable calorie deficit), they can be a helpful tool.

Ultimately, if your goal is weight loss, I recommend meeting 1:1 with a Registered Dietitian to derive a plan based on your body and your unique needs.

Green Juice for Detox:

Does drinking green juice detox the body? Short answer: No, not really.

Just like there is no one food or drink that will cause weight loss, there is no food or drink that will magically detox the body. Our bodies have natural detox systems that include our livers, kidneys, and lungs that all work to filter and excrete toxins and waste from the body.

If you would like to support your body’s natural detox processes, I recommend aiming for a healthy lifestyle as a whole. Eat a varied, balanced diet with lots of nutrient-dense whole foods (this can include green juice!). Exercise regularly. Practice good sleep hygiene in order to get adequate sleep, and make sure to stay hydrated!

Green Juice Ingredients:

You can really use whatever green vegetables you have at home, but here’s what I use to make this homemade blender green juice:

  • Romaine lettuce
  • Cucumber
  • Celery
  • Apple
  • Ginger root
  • Mint leaves

How to Make Green Juice in a Blender:

Step 1: Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender. I also call this recipe my Vitamix Green Juice, because I use my Vitamix blender to make it!

Step 2: Blend on high for 3-5 minutes, until all fruits and veggies are liquefied.

Step 3: Pour the liquid mixture from the blender through a mesh strainer into a large bowl.

Step 4: With the back of a spoon, gently press the liquid out of the pulp remaining in the strainer.

Step 5: Transfer the juice to a glass bottle or jar and chill in the fridge (optional) before serving.

Storing Blender Green Juice:

Store the juice in a sealed container (like a glass bottle or mason jar) in the refrigerator. It will keep up to 5 days.
